When joining a climbing wall, there are generally a few rules to abide by to ensure that you can get out on the wall as soon as possible to start climbing. These are generally outlined on the walls website before you visit.
Complete Your Induction First
If it is your first time climbing on a particular climbing wall, it’s likely that before you can start climbing you will have to watch a safety briefing or complete a short induction. The purpose of this is to manage risk in accordance with workplace health and safety duties that also apply to leisure venues.
Keep the Floor Clear Beneath Climbers
If someone falls off then you have landed them – please step to the side and watch from there.
Learn to Fall Safely
On bouldering walls try to land on both feet with knees slightly bent. If this is not possible then try to roll back on to the crash mat instead of trying to break your fall with your arms.
Call On and Off the Wall
Before you start climbing say “on” for others to know that you are using that section of the climbing wall, and say “off” when you have finished climbing that section to let others know that they can now use it.
Shoes and Chalk Rules
No climbing shoes to be worn outside of the matted climbing area. No loose chalk to be used on the floor. This is to be brought in a bag with a chalk ball. There may be specific rules for the wall you visit so please check when you arrive.
Report Damaged Holds Immediately
Loose holds are not acceptable. Report any loose or damaged holds to staff immediately.
