Roof Songs

Events

Have you ever played a game that requires you to create song titles containing a specific item? The challenge for today is to come up with song titles that include the word “roof”. Let’s get started:

James Taylor – Up on the Roof

This well-known song uses the roof to escape from things when they get too much. Many artists have covered the song, including Neil Diamond in 1995 and Robson and Jerome. Gerry Goffin wrote the lyrics, and claimed that this was his favourite song of all those he had written. It was first broadcast in 1962 and has been described by many as a remarkable tune. This song is also in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When you need Roofers Bristol, contact https://www.mogfordprescott.co.uk/roofers-bristol

Connie Francis – Fiddler on The Roof

The critically acclaimed play about Topol and his struggles in Tsarist Russia. The musical was first performed in 1964 and released in 1971 as a movie. This is one of Broadway’s longest-running productions, and it is still a favourite for school productions.

The Supremes – Up the Ladder to the Roof

It was released in 1970 as part of the Right On album. Diana Ross left the group a week before this song was recorded with new singer Jean Terrell. The song was ranked number 5 on the UK soul chart, and number 6 in the US.

Tin Roof Blues by Harry Connick Jr

The Rhythm Kings of New Orleans recorded this song in 1923. Since then, it has become one of New Orleans’ most popular jazz songs. The original sheet music cover featured a picture of the Tin Roof Cafe in New Orleans. Harry Connick Jr., Louis Armstrong and Floyd Cramer are just a few of the famous musicians who have performed this song.

Carole King and the story behind the song

Up on the Roof was written by Carole King, with lyrics by her then husband Gerry Goffin, and it became a major hit for The Drifters in 1962. King was a musical prodigy who sold songs to New York publishers while still at high school. Her hits run to around five hours if played back to back, and include You’ve Got a Friend and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.

She came up with the melody in the car, and the song was first called My Secret Place, which never sounded quite right. As a working mother of two young children running a hit factory, the idea of a quiet spot above the noise to take stock and watch the world go by must have appealed.

Goffin rated it among the best songs he ever wrote, and King chose it to close her first solo album. Its theme of escaping the rat race is a big part of why it still connects with listeners.
