Steering box Adjustment and Play Checks
Excess play at the steering wheel of older and classic vehicles is quite common. But often a simple adjustment is sufficient to rectify any problems.
Measure the Free Play First
You need to measure the free play in the steering first. Rock the steering wheel gently from side to side with the engine switched off and the wheels straight ahead. Acceptable free play at the rim of the wheel is up to about 25mm. If there is too much free play then you can try to adjust the box to reduce it.
Find the Centre Position
Turn slowly through full lock and back through to half way between lock and lock. The centre point is where the steering box worm is subjected to the most wear. This is the point that you need to check and attempt to adjust.
Use the Adjuster Screw
On the top or side of the box housing there will be found a locknut and an adjuster screw. Loosen the locknut and then tighten the adjuster screw in half turns checking the play after each half turn. The aim is to remove excess free movement without making the steering feel stiff or hard through the centre.
Lock the Adjustment In
Once you have set the amount of free play to your liking, lock the adjustment in place. Hold the adjuster screw in position and tighten up the locknut in a star pattern until snug. Recheck the amount of free play in the steering, then take it for a test drive making several slow turns lock to lock to ensure that there are no binding or tight spots anywhere in the movement.
Know When Adjustment Is Not Enough
If the screw is already nearly fully tightened or making the steering too tight then the internal components of the steering box will be worn and require a rebuild or replacement.
A simple check and corresponding adjustments will extend the life of worn steering gear that is worn but still good for years to come.
